New Healthy Eating Options

The Shire of Murray in partnership with the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) and Western Australian School Canteen Association (WASCA) have created a healthier food environment at the Murray Aquatic and Leisure Centre (MALC) thanks to a grant from Healthway.

Healthy eating is identified as a priority area within the Shire of Murray Public Health Plan 2021-2025, with residents consuming less than the daily recommended serves of fruit and vegetables.

“Making sure healthy food and drink options are available at our local recreation centres has a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our community,” said Shire of Murray President Cr David Bolt.

“Players, visitors and staff at the MALC now have the choice to purchase healthy foods and drinks with an increased proportion of the refreshed menu including healthier options,” he said.

Other project strategies include the installation of new healthy signage and educational information to replace junk food signage. Product stickers have also been introduced, where food and drinks are colour coded to align with the traffic light system; indicating which options are green (healthy), amber (choose carefully) or red (limit), based on their nutritional value.

Thanks to South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS), the Western Australian School Canteen Association (WASCA) and Healthway for helping us make this happen.
