World Drowning Prevention Day 2026 – Unite to turn the tide on drowning

Published on Friday, 10 July 2026 at 8:29:00 AM

In April 2021, the United Nations declared 25 July as World Drowning Prevention Day, recognising drowning as a serious but preventable public health issue.

Every year, over 300,000 people worldwide lose their lives to drowning – including hundreds of families across Australia. Most drowning deaths occur in low and middle-income countries, but no community is immune. Children and young people are most at risk.

This World Drowning Prevention Day, communities across Australia and around the globe are uniting to turn the tide on drowning by raising awareness, building lifesaving skills and taking simple actions that help keep people safe in, on and around water.

MALC is proud to support Royal Life Saving Australia and the global movement to prevent drowning.

Here’s how you can take action:

  • Enrol in swimming lessons
  • Supervise children at all times around water
  • Check your pool fence and gate
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs around water
  • Wear a lifejacket when on the water
  • Know the conditions
  • Learn CPR
  • Train to become a swim teacher or pool lifeguard

Every action matters. Together, we can unite to turn the tide on drowning.

This year, MALC will be extending the celebration across the week of 20–25 July, encouraging our community to join us as we go blue and help spread the message that water safety matters.

Throughout the week, visitors are encouraged to wear something blue when attending swimming lessons, fitness classes or visiting the Centre. Whether it is a blue shirt, hat, accessory or workout gear, every splash of blue helps show support and start conversations about water safety.

Everyone has a role to play

Drowning prevention starts with awareness, education and simple actions. By learning to swim, supervising children around water, understanding water safety and supporting those who teach and protect our community, we can all help create safer environments.

Join us from 20–25 July and help MALC turn blue for World Drowning Prevention Day.

Together, we can help spread the message that water safety matters, not just this week, but all year round.
